Explore Edinburgh Castle - Guided Walking Tour & Entry Ticket in Edinburgh

Begin your outdoor tour on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh, then follow your guide up to the iconic castle to uncover Scotland’s bloody history - from evidence of a fort spanning almost 3,000 years to its status as a royal stronghold since the reign of King David I in the 12th century; you’ll hear dramatic stories of the kings and queens who lived here, the sieges that shaped the fortress, and the royal birth of King James VI within its walls. Once inside the castle walls, your guide will lead you through the different sections of the fortress and point out the highlights across the complex - three museums, two prisons, a canine cemetery, the Chapel of Saint Margaret, the National Monument to the fallen of Scotland, the Great Hall, and a Royal Palace - all presented in an engaging, family-friendly way that connects the sites to the wider history of Edinburgh and nearby Leith. (ENTIRE TOUR WILL REMAIN OUTDOORS; buildings are not accessible during the tour.)

Summary: It was easy to find our tour guide at Mercat Cross. Something new for us, the tour uses headsets so that we could all hear our guide clearly without bunching in around her. Linda was a terrific guide taking us up and down the Royal Mile, thru wynds and closes, with stories all along the way. As we entered the castle grounds she had a steady pace as she pointed out each building and their history. We were sorry for the tour to end, but we had ample free time to explore the castle and buildings on our own. Highly recommended tour
