Summary: This was a rare and fantastic experience — our captain, Damien took us to the Calanches of Piana, the Scandola Reserve and the peculiar little town of Girolata then on the way back to Porto we paused to watch a red and orange sunset. Along the way he told us (in French and English) lots of fascinating history, both geologic and human, about the significance of the immense and beautiful rock formations and the unusual nature of what was once a pirate town but nowadays —still only accessible by water— is more of a laidback yacht stopoff where the only pirates run bars and restaurants and docile cattle may be seen walking the beach. Damien thrilled us on the way back to Porto with some high speed circles in the water. The fellows especially liked that part. The trip was fully booked but we had plenty of room with seats that we could straddle like being on horseback. The craft was narrow and low enough so we could go inside caves too. It was the 3 and 1/2 hour trip that started at 5:30. Stupendous!
